How to get free stuff for your movies

Don’t let large corporations have all the fun. To keep your budget under control, consider using the time-honored tradition of product placement. But on a very small scale.

If you’re shooting an independent production or a student film, you shouldn’t have to pay out of pocket to feed your crew and cast. First, consider if any storefronts will be seen in the background of your shots. If there’s a restaurant or a coffee shop, approach those managers weeks in advance. Tell them that their storefront may be seen in the background of your movie, and would they be interested in donating breakfast or lunch during the shoot. Generally, the smaller the business, the better the result.

Here in New York, it’s hot. Stifling hot. Do the Right Thing hot. But production schedules don’t care that Manhattan has turned into a sauna. With summer, heat becomes another issue you have to deal with while shooting independent film and web video. How do you keep everybody sane?

If your movie Pitch on Massify doesn’t have a video attached to it already, I highly suggest you consider posting one. It’s a great way to give your idea a dynamic, interactive element. A video makes a Pitch more complete and also gives it a better shot at being featured on our home page.

So why no video? Lack of equipment? Lack of ideas? Fear?

Competitions June 2nd, 2008

And then there were four

The casting contest is over, and four high-caliber actors, Katherine Pawlak, Josh Davidson, Heather Tocquigny and Trey Farley, are excited to begin shooting Perkins’ 14.

“I’m anxious to get to Romania and start working with everyone!” says Heather.
